High Sierra Wild Horse Sanctuary and Gentling Center was established to help provide a safe haven or temporary home for horses when their owners are faced with unforeseen circumstances or horses that are in need of quality care when found abandoned, abused or in need of a home.
At HSWHS we have over 60 horses 3 donkeys. We have wild mustangs that have been adopted from the BLM and a variety of horse breeds from private farms as well as many horses that are our family here. Many of the horses were abused or not cared for. Some are wild. We work diligently to give these horses a wonderful life.
We gentle the wild and abused horses to help them adjust to a loving and caring home. Our goal is to help these horses feel loved and cared for. Some of the horses will remain here with us forever and for that we are grateful. Many others will be able to be adopted because of our efforts.
We work tirelessly to prevent horses from being sold for slaughter. We often buy horses that would otherwise be sent to the slaughterhouse and we also work to educate people about this horrible practice. Many people that sell their horses do not realize that they could be sent away to be killed for dog food or just because they "can't be saved"!
